It's been over a year since I had one, but I quite enjoyed it. Sure, it's "dorky" looking, but I found it pretty pleasant to drive, especially give it's utility, and the ergonomics seemed standard - and hey, aren't the window switches in the middle, that should have made you feel at home! The seats were high and upright, but the SUV crowd loves that, so hard to fault GM there.
I like getting the Mazda6 from Hertz, and even got the hatch version once (wouldn't have noticed except I was early to a meeting and was poking around the car). I agree the four cylinder is a dog, but in terms of fun to drive it's my favorite rental car. If you could get the MazdaSpeed6 in the hatch model, I think it would be a worth 9k successor. the Mercury Milan V6 I had recently from Hertz was also a pleasant suprise - a lot of power from that one.
