What I noticed the moment I got in was that I couldn't get to a comfortable driving position, that the A-pillars were huge, the B-pillars blocked my over the left shoulder view, that the seats were uncomfortable and didn't adjust enough, and it just felt small inside.
It seems like a practical small wagon for someone who likes the styling (which I think is dorky for the sake of being different-looking), but that's as far as it goes. It's just a small wagon. No big deal.
The problem with being accustomed to higher line cars like Saabs is that when you get into lower level cars you notice a lot of shortcomings right away. I realize Hyundais, Chevys and Mazdas don't really compete with Saabs as new cars, but I look at a different dollar to dollar comparison. If you can only spend a given amount, and need a car that does may things well, is it better to buy a used Saab than a new something else? Depends on your needs and what's important to you. But I can't envision using a HHR the way I use my 9K or my wife's 9-5 wagon (towing a utility trailer or doing 7 to 15 hour trips). And either one cost us less than an HHR.
