The only GM-sourced Subaru is the Traviq microvan sold in Japan -- a rebadged Opel Zafira. It's really the cream de la cream of minivans if you ask me, so it's not a big insult.
As an avid Subaru fan, I take great pride in the fact that FHI, the maker of Subaru brand cars and trucks, is still an independent company. GM owns a non-controlling 20% stake. GM will never *EVER* have anything even close to FHI engineering. None of their cars have the ingenuity, the precision and the good sense of Subarus. Not even close. Safety-wise, Subarus are second to none. Ever since they started rallying (and winning World Rally Championships) the cars are very strong, with excellent active and passive safety measures. The newest Impreza/Legacy platform is extremely stiff, with very thick high-strength steel in strategic places. It feels very stiff, too -- very apparent when you drive over rough roads. Especially the lighter Imprezas feel like they are made out of a solid piece of granit.
