I was referring to the old 9-3, which came in last or close to it in all the recent comparisons. Sometimes it wasn't even included. Always got praised for the powerful turbo engines, slammed for almost everything else.
If you read further down on that page, you'll find data showing the L series having fewer initial quality defects than the Camry, Accord, and Passat. A consumer satisfaction index has it rated #1, tied with the Jetta. Something called the Center for Auto Safety's Ultimate Car Book rated the L the #1 "intermediate" car.
Like I said, it might not be as rock solid as a Camry, but I think it's safe to say it's a pretty decent car.
For a very good review of the LW300 wagon, check out this comparo from Road and Track:
http://www.roadandtrack.com/reviews/roadtests/articleDisplay.asp?articleID=221
It actually came in last, behind the WRX, Jetta VR6, and V40, but the write up and editor comments are very favorable. It's one of those reviews where all the cars are quite good.
