Bought 40 months ago a 1991 Mercedes Station Wagon for $10,500 that is now worth perhaps $5000 (after putting 50k miles on it). It has also cost $10,600 in repairs and maintenance. That works out to $390 per month. So for an extra $50 a month my wife could have been driving a brand new car (there is an added insurance cost, however, and the annual property tax to pay).
Not too bad, but I regard my Mercedes as having been a pretty bad deal - not one I would willingly repeat. Leasing a new car is a better, but more expensive, experience. And the hit you take for depreciation in the first couple of years is usually way beyond the expected repair and maintenance cost. I am pretty sure my wife agrees with you, though.
