with such a marginal difference in cost for the new lease vs. used ownership. Actually, that is the purpose of the lease, no? In an industry of over capacity move more new cars but give the people consuming the cars the incentive to not pay for the whole thing, just the portion they use. The brilliance in the idea of a lease is that the consuming nature of our country means that the lease becomes attractive and in doing so makes the resale value of user-owned cars that much lower... i think we could find a direct parallel somewhere ...and thus the reduced value of the used car (as I experienced recently) makes the appeal of a lease stronger. Adn so the cycle continues. (?)
I do think that it is ultimately a personal issue as to whether, for example, in our real world examples of 1991 Mercedes EWagon vs. 2002 Saab 9-5 the latter is not worth $50 more per month. There may be a time though that cars are simply not kept for very long, such as is the case in the uber-consumptive Japan. Technology is making a comeback in new cars and the idea of owning a ten year old car will no longer seem thinkable in the very near future, no? (This, of course, assumes some calming of geopolitical issues.)
