Dear Friends,
Thanks to all who replied to my query about making Saabine 'track worthy' thus finalizing the "R21 spec" (2.1l 16v high output turbo engine...).
After reviewing all suggestions, and talking with Glenn Ellis at Trent Saab and my dealer over here, to me the following seems a logical course of action:
* Have front alignment set to the (in)famous Turbo! specs - for this purpose I'll stick at the 'aggressive' end of its bandwidth: 1.0-1.2 deg. negative camber, 2.5-2.75 deg. positive castor, toe in as close to zero as possible.
Check rear axle alignment.
* Fit rear sway bar from dealer's parts car with new stock bushings
* Replace APC solenoid by Abbott Racing manual boost control valve set at 1.3 bar. Set Trent RRFPR base fuel pressure at 3.4 bar. Double check operation of 5th fuel injector and water injection systems... ;-) To be on the safe side, I think replacing the ageing fuel pump with the high flow (220 l/hr) Bosch direct replacement from Speedparts Sweden seems to be a good idea, particularly as it is not any more expensive as the OE part save from shipping cost.
In the meanwhile, I'll:
* Remove the foam sound deadening stuff from beneath the carpet, partly replacing it with a coat of Noisekiller Blue (anyone got an online source for that, by chance?) in strategic places.
* Replace rear electric window lifters by manual cranks with corresponding door panels
* Remove APC
* Remove cruise control, depending on complication
Now for some questions:
- The Koni's need re-setting to match the spring rates as per Graham from Trent Saab, who drove the car 1 1/2 years ago and commented on it being "oversprung and underdamped". Seems like this is my chance to replace some shock bushings with PU. SAS lists two of them: a lower shock bushing for the fronts, and an upper bushing for the fronts that will also fit the upper rears. Should I go out and do them all (i.e. order 1 set of lowers and two sets of uppers )?
- Due to the short overall gearing with the late-type gearbox and #6 primary drive, I want engine power to build up to as close to the LH's rev limit as possible. Will my modest turbo upgrade, lightened/balanced rotary assembly and the fueling mods account for this at their own, or would I need a camshaft swap in addition to accomplish that on the stock 2.0 head? Someone (Vince T, Damien?) mentioned having the spec of a G6 exhaust cam replicated by Crower for a ridiculously low amount ($65 or so). I would be very interested in this - if this would be a solution and someone here would be so nice to arrange having one ground in exchange for the appropriate amount of $$$ for a core they may have laying around + the custom grind itself, up front. No specific desire to have Swedish Dynamics fetch $450 for a pair of "Red Series" cams... ;-)
Any other things I have overlooked? Given the history of Project Saabine, I am determined to have all the stuff on the list of Things Left To Do that I am compiling now done in one go, so speak up now or stay silent forever.... ;-)
TIA and Merry Christmas to all,
Eric & Saabine
