My 2000 Aero AT could not be dialed up at all without immediate limp mode. There was no benefit in regards to boost coming on faster or increased power. This seems to vary from car to car. As well as the differences between transmissions, upgraded ECU's seem to have a higher tolerance. In my experience with the SMBC, the upgraded ECU (BSR stage 1) in a MT Aero allowed the SMBC to be tuned much higher without CEL or limp mode activation...too high of a setting to be honest. In trying to find "the line", I dialed the boost high enough to pin the needle to the back of the red which could not have been good for EGT's, intake temps (high boost fighting a partially closed TB) or the a/f ratio. Sure the car was very quick but the fact that such a high setting could be set without CEL or limp mode alarmed me. WIthout analysis of changes in a/f ratio, EGT, power levels, spool times, intake temps, etc. it is impossible to say what actually happens with SMBC installation. I do not understand why there is such a HUGE difference in feelings about the device between American Saabers and European Saabers. I don't think there has ever been such an analysis performed. Personally I would prefer to err on the side of caution given the minimal benefits to be had with the device. BUT that's just me. There are many who swear by the device.
