Data is the way to go here. By data I do not mean tuners data, but data measured by independent parties.
Measuring data is not simple. One needs some knowhow and appropriate tools, which are usually way too expensive for normal saabers. There are some simple devices, like OBD readers available, but this kind of devices have for instance very modest logging frequency available. CAN interfaces could be some kind of solution, and some of us are testing them currently. Naturally one can use good quality external sensors for measuring EGT:s, AFRs etc, but these are not something which normal saabers will buy. They are difficult to install and there are several issues which can affect the results ( like sensors position etc. ).
In this situation, there is plenty of room for tuners to publish misleading and exaggerating information. For example, they can give you some values ( like BHP ), which have no value without several other values. If they publish performance figures, they are given only for short, selected intervals. They know, that 0,01% of their customers will ever reproduce those tests or take their car to dyno after upgrades. And if someone will do this with poor results, tuners can alwasy say that there is some other problems in that car. To me this seems to be quite a nice business, indeed.
What value has 300 BHP if it does not make your car quicker on road compared to 250 BHP ? Or what value has videos, which have been driven under perfect conditions to downhill ?
There are no cheap, real horses available for 9-5 aero ( T7/B235R ). Tuners know it, and some of us know it. I claim, that avarage saaber, who buys 300 SW powered BHPs for 9-5 aero, does not know, that there are huge differencies between 300 BHP and 300 BHP cars. Paper horses are tiny and weak, and they have very short lifetime on road under hard driving. Lifetime is a couple of seconds / one hard acceleration, and after that your 300 BHP can be less than the original 250BHP.
What I'm saying here, is to get some business independent information before wasting one's money.
