20years, I found it!! The car came with XM radio (not factory). The unit has a under the dash box called a controller and a unit on the dash called the head.
The head has a on/off button that turned off and on the display, but does not turn off the controller. When I found the controller it was warm.
I switch the hot lead to the controller to hot only when the engine is running (cig lighter) and my problem has gone away. I should have known to look for anything added first. What a relief. Thanks for all you help, I started to look at the add-on when you said it is not normal for this problem.
