We looked at the Mercedes b/4 we bought our 9-5 with the V6T the other week - I would Never even consider a BMW - Friends have one and the problems that they went through (mainly dealer related) were every owners nightmare!
Given the incentives, we went with a 2001. I have no hesitation regarding their V6 power plant - if it holds up as well as the 4T is to be seen - but if I follow my maintenance as planned I should be good to go - My last SAAB (9000 4T) lasted well over 200000 b/4 the transmission gave up the ghost (Automatic)...
I highly recommend the 9-5 V6T - Good Luck in what ever you choose.
