The 1999 4 cylinder 9-5s have had some turbocharger problems. Check this board for the last 3 months. However, I believe the problem has been solved. That said, unless you do mostly city driving, where the 4s better fuel economy comes into play, the 6 is the better all around engine. It has 11% more peak torque, 13% more at 5000 rpm (freeway churning), 11% more torque at 4000 rpm, 11% more torque at 3000 rpm, and 9% more torque at 2000 rpm. Driving at mostly freeway speeds, I have averaged better than 28 mpg. City is considerably lower, slightly over 20 mpg, but still satisfactory. That torque difference is not only important for freeway churning but also as a safety factor at all speeds.
