Bob: You have made a terrific point about this long running drive train debate in the best way. For a vehicle driven on the street in a LEGAL, or at least "close to legal",manner,all of this talk about AWD, and how some versions of it tend to understeer,is largely irrelevant. In street driving at legal speeds, most cars neither understeer nor oversteer, they just plain steer!
Under and oversteer are handling charecteristics that come in a s acar is pushed towards the limits of adhesion. If you are driving on dry pavement, and even come close to the limits of adhesion on a modern passenger car, at least the type of cars discussed on this board, you are just flat out driving in an irresponsible manner. Perhaps in Switzerland,there is no need to respect the rights and safety of others, or maybe there are no laws regarding driving at all. Anybody out there know?
The fact is that Haldex,Torsen BLah blah blah. Any of these components can be put together to produce a good all wheel drive system that will fulfill the needs of average drivers on the street, mainly, to keep you going when snow, ice, or other road anomilies tend to reduce traction.
The kind of performance driving that Mr. Coolknight is referring to here in the US would get him locked up in most states and is most commonly referred to as racing. This is not what street driving is about for the vast majority of drivers, and is why the engineers who design street cars do not use the same criteria for performance as those used by racing engineers.
Thank you for recognizing this fact and expressing it for those of us who try to obey the law and drive like there are others on the road.
