Intresting, I've not tried to beat the Audi system in the way you suggest it can be beaten, but I'd like to try it some day. In normal slick driving conditions the system has worked just fine and I've driven in some very soft sand that had 2WD cars stuck. I've driven Saabs on the track and found both the Aero and SE to be significant understeerers at the limit, probably not a bad thing in a road car. I've not driven the Audi on the track, but in spirited driving on the road, it understeers less than the Saab SE, but that is likely because it has wider, lower profile tires and a tighter suspension. Both cars have around 60% of their weight on the front wheels, usually a recipe for understeer at the limit. I agree that if the Audi could shift more torque to the rear wheels, power induced oversteer could reduce understeer at the limit. With a 50/50 split, there just isn't enough on the rears to make the tail step out, particularly with Audi's very good multi link suspension holding things in place. Just like in the Saab, I'll bet a quick yank on the hand brake might just make the rear step out, I just don't have the stones to try it on the road! Here is where electronic magic can help, I think the BMW system normally sends 80% torque to the rear in an attempt to preserve RWD feel. I've not driven one so don't know if it works.
Over here in the States, we can't sample the pleasures of Lancia's and Alfa's just yet, but I hear they may be coming soon. I hope so, because they seem to be great products. The Subie WRX should be entertaining, but dosen't offer the level of fit, finish and refinement available in Saab and Audi that I like to have.
At any rate, in the real world of everyday driving, the Audi Quattro system works very well, providing safe, secure handling in inclement conditions, and the ability to toast most any 2WD opposition RWD or FWD in a drag on a wet road!
