The 9-5 is nice. But, the 9-5 will cost about $8,000 more for a base 4 cylinder. I have owned both. The Saab is a marginally better car in some ways, such as power and the seats. I suspect that the 9-5 may be slightly better in a wreck, but the Passat is pretty solid also. The Passat handles better, steers nicer, and has some nice features such as auto up on the windows. The base Passat has a nice manual seat with lots of adjustments. The 9-5 has power seats. The 9-5 is wider, but the Passat has similar rear seat leg room. The base Passat has more headroom when the seat is all the way up. My 9-5 was reliable, but made many odd, nasty sounding noises from the engine bay. When cold it would stall, and the power steering pump whined. The AC would clunk when engaged and the engine would almost stall. My Passat never had any of those problems.
If leasing, the Saab is not much more, but if purchaing, I wold get the Passat as it is a better overall value.
We have a 9-3 SE which my wife drives. She wanted a hatchback and my wife does not like the Passat's round shape. But, the Passat, any Passat, is a much better car than a 9-3 and much roomier.
