Not hypothetical. I currently have a base Passat wagon which I bought for $1000 off list, or about $21,500 a year ago. I need another car and am very attracted to the base 9-5. My Passat handles and cruises beautifully, and has had zero defects in 24k miles. I have had 3 Saab 900s in the past and enjoyed them, with mixed reliability after 60k miles. I think the current 9-3 suspension is well behind that of the Passat and will not consider it. But the 2002 9-5, stiffened this year, feels as good or better to me than the Passat. I do not think that the comparison of 9-5 to Passat is apples to oranges. But I cannot convince myself that the 9-5 is $10,000 or so better.
I hate lux features on cars: leather seats, sunroof, wipers on the headlights, electric windows, cupholders. I will accept radio, heater, airconditioner, but try to minimize the rest. I do want the most sophisticated engine, transmission, suspension.
