I have a '99 9-5 SE V6 with 43,000 miles. This engine has been completely trouble free so far. I suspect the dealer who told you the V6 was junk was either referring to the old V6 in the 9000 model or did not have a used V6 to sell! The V6 is more refined than the 4 and has much better off the line performance. Bear in mind it requires timing belt changes at 60K mile intervals (mandatory if you want to avoid costly repairs to damaged valves). The 4 is a fine engine too, and has tremendous upgrade potential. In my opinion you really can't go wrong with either of them, just drive both and make your decision.
Good luck with your Saab!
Robert L.
