a) Your salesperson is a nitwit--find someone else who's at least knowledgeable about 9-5s.
b) Drive several examples and buy the car you prefer.
I've owned both I4 and V6 Saabs (99EMS, 9000t, 9-5 SE V6). All three engines proved equally reliable i.e., no significant problems with any of them. There have been no predictable engine issues with the 9-5 V6 reported here on TSN in over two years of its production. Some point at the timing belt as a weakness--it's got a 60,000-mile service life and Saab replaces the first one for free.
I chose the V6 because in '99, the LPT 4 was too slow around town for my preferences. I'm sure it's more suited to the task now that the output has been increased. Again, buy the model you prefer and don't worry about engine reliability (make sure all recall work has been done to whichever one you choose). The 9-5 has proven to be Saab's high-water mark for quality.
Good hunting,
--Rick
