It was the other way around for me. The 185hp four base motor stacks up more closely to the V6 than the 170hp four does, so I guess it depends on when you bought your 9-5. I would have considered the 170hp motor only with the 5speed manual, as the auto version would be a slug compared to the V6 auto. However, this only applies to '99 models since '00 base models can be upgraded to exactly V6 specs with the ECU upgrade. The current 185hp motor with auto tranny has more punch the the previous engine, and comes with a less dear price than the V6. And with the Premium package upgrade, you could spec out the base model to SE specs-and still get the vented seats, etc.
So I went with the four.
For the '02 model year, SAAB better differentiates the 9-5s, giving the V6 (Arc) models a little more cachet as far as optinos go, with vented seats being standard (but unavailable in base and Aero models), etc.
