The V-6 in the 9-5 has been as trouble free as anything else in it. In theory, the weakness in this motor is thought to be the fact that it uses a belt to drive the camshafts instead of a chain, and that a failure would cause catastrophic engine damage(true), however, the belt gets replaced by Saab under waranty at 60,000 miles, so the first one you would have to do is at 120,000. By the way, chains can break as well, with equally spectacular results, however the odds of it happening are a lot lower.
One thing that I believe happens on this board with regard to the V-6,that makes a lot of people pan it is the fact that it only comes with an automatic transmission, therefore,a lot of so called "purists" will dismiss it as not a real"mans" car since it does not offer a stick. For the record, the auto gearboxwes used in the 9-5 are some of the best in the industry, and the stick in the 9-5 is one of the weakest points of the car.
If you were going to get an auto anyway, the V-6 is every bit as nice a car to drive as the base model four. Mileage may be down a bit,but you are probably factoring that into your decision anyway.
Good luck:
