Jeff: I have driven mauals for over thirty five years,in about 30 cars I have owned, and now fully disagree with your premise about how a manual supposedly gives you more control. Modern engine management systems, which are driven by both technology and regulatory issues, have mostly been develped around the premise that there will be an automatic transmission in the vehicle. Putting in a manual is largely an afterthought as far as how well these are integrated into the car. Consider Anti lock brakes as an example. What happens to the engine in your manual shift car when you engage the brakes. you must either step on the clutch quickly, or you end up stopping and starting your engine 15 times per second. If you are in the middle of an emergency maneuver that caused you to activate your anti pock brakes, how much control are you maintaining if your drive wheels are disconnected from the power? The recent posts about how the engine in the 9-5 tends to stay up at higher rpm when first pressing in the clutch? Not even noticable on the automatic. The engine management systems behave much better with an auto box behind them. The drive by wire throttle can tell the transmission when it has been let up much faster than your own reflexes can do in a manual car. Likewise, when the shift is finished, the drive by wire throttle can resume the correct opening to continue accelerating mcuh faster and smoother than a conventional manual could ever do.
There is much more continuous development and refinement going on with automatics today. In fact, the only real work being done with manual transmissions and clutches today is to make them automatic! I'm sure you have read about the new generation E-H transmissons that are starting to show up in high end performance cars. I predict that within five to six years, you will not be able to buy a conventional manual shifter in cars that are in the class of the 9-5,meaning,MB,BMW, Audi,Lexus,Infinity etc, and I believe the US will lead the way in adoption of this new technology, which can offer the manual selection of gears that you speak of, yet do it without the physical act of stepping on a clutch and moving a gear lever.
Personally,I can't wait, but untillI can order my Saab with one of those,I'll take the AW five speed anyday over Saab's excuse for a manual transmission.
