I was surprised as well to read of the many ranges provided by BMW. I think you might be on to something as far as being a guinea pig for the company. But, they do have a reputation of providing what the car guy wants. I drove one of the 01 all wheel drive 3 series the other day. It has something about it that is hard to express. Great brakes, and a firm yet not so jarring ride that was really impressive. My 9K Aero is similar yet not quite as refined. The I am not putting up 40K for a car comes from other priorities now. (read kids) Not that I would not like to, but, just can not justify. Thus, I wait until the car has depreciated enough for me to justify to wife. (unfortunatly, I do not have to wait that long for Saabs to hit my range) A buddy of mine has a 01 9-5 with an auto, nice car, but, no Aero. That's what led me to look at the 02 9-5 Aero.
There is no right answer to this debate, but, for me the stick is it. For others, the auto is the answer. I just hope that I get a chance to teach my kids how to drive a stick as my father did me. (get in the dam car and drive, you want a stick, drive it!) They have become much more friendly with the newer designs. But, there is still something about a stick.
