Saabgirl,
Eventually the band's friction material wears away down to the steel and then the drum begins to get scored, much like brake pads and rotors or shoes and drums do. When it reaches that stage all the adjustment in the world won't do any good but it won't hurt to try. If you are going to do that adjustment you'll need an inch/pound torque wrench and a special 4 or 8 point socket (and the procedure/spec.). The higher the mileage on the transmission the more likely it is that the band is shot and the drum is scored so how many miles are on this transmission?
Be aware that when you do the transmission swap from auto to manual you need a large pile of parts besides just the transmission. The general consensus is that it's best to have an entire 5 speed parts car nearby when this is done. I could type in the list for you but it's long and I'll probably leave something out and compound your frustration. Also it's a big job and if you install a used transmission that craps out in short order you shall be most displeased. Not trying to discourage you just providing some pointers many of us have learned the hard way.
