Thanks, Bill and Cmyles, I cleaned and greased the throttle cable's pivot where it attaches to the throttle lever on the throttle body. It was pretty gummed up. The cable seems fine where it goes into the transmission, and also slides allright in its sheath. Not the smoothest, but it positively returns to bottom when released. I know I have to be careful not to let the clip come loose, or I'll be stuck disassembling the unit...
I got the throttle adjustment procedure from the Bentley manual, so I'll order the gauge and it will tell me what's going on with the system pressure when I pull the cable. So far, I do know that the transmission makes more "hissing" noise when I pull the cable while the car is idling. I do think focusing on throttle valve is barking up sorta the right tree, because it often shifts too late, in my opinion. But it also shifts very softly into second, and very HARD into third. Aren't soft shifts indicative of too little throttle pressure, and hard ones indicative of too much? I've got one of each! My thinking is that maybe with a little mental diagnostics, I can narrow it down to which operation is having trouble, and have a better idea of which valves to clean, if it comes to that.
Also thanks to Bill, but my boyfriend did pick up the seven flywheel bolts. He generally picks up more than needed during these junkyard outings... Good to know about them though!
