Saabgirl,
Yep I used to rebuild the hell out of those old T37s but not anymore. Mostly just yank them out and put in my rebuilt five speeds now. As Bill says, it's probably time to have a good look at the throttle pressure cable. That's the cable that goes from the trans. to the throttle body. If it was jammed up, not sliding smoothly or grossly maladjusted it could definitely be part of the problem. Disconnect it from the throttle body and see if it slides real smoothly in it's sheath. If you need the adjustment procedure post back here and someone will post it. Changing the ATF is a good thing. Old timers often say that it will screw things up but there's no real logic in that. Contaminates never make a unit work better, especially metal particles. Just to make an argument, how could something that's gonna jam your valves be helpful even if it did give the friction elements more grip (which is doesn't). I wouldn't use that snake oil, if you have gunk that won't dissolve in carb or brake cleaner then snake oil won't make things any better. Wish I could be more positive for you, maybe working with the throttle pressure cable is the ticket and you'll be shifting OK, otherwise there comes a point when a unit is just worn beyond working properly. Gear up to do that swap this summer, they're a drag to do in the cold (oh how I know!). Good luck.
