trans speedo gear

speedo failed a while back and i have been waiting for the opportunity to tackle it. A clutch slipping gave me the excuse to throw money at it and now that the clutch is done (with a new speed pickup sensor and gear which eeuro sells) the speedo is still inop. After a little spin test, the speedo needle moved which indicates its the gear inside the tranny.
I dont need the speedo to tell me that i am indeed speeding but it would be nice to have full boost which i believe is not there since there is no speed reading. Without boost the magic of saab 9000 ownership is fading... and the wife's nagging 'its got to go' is closing in on me.... .
I have to imagine that there is another way to feed the speed signal to the ECU. Would it possible to employ one of the ABS sensors pulses? The way i see it now, its either rebuild the tranny (from looking at the shop manual pages getting to the plastic gear does not seem like a weekend job)
Or possible get an used trans and swap it - not really a job i want to do without a lift....
Any suggestions?
manual 95 9000 CS with full boost(long time ago). 180K
thanks!
