Got the pulley off today, using light pressure from behind with a pry bar and hitting the circumference of the pulley with a 4-pount deadblow plastic-face hammer it slowly worked its way forward. Once it was loosened up a bit I was able to pop it off with minimal pressure using two pry bars. The crank snout looks good, nice and smooth with no scoring, as does the inside surface of the pulley.
Although probably the right thing to do is to buy a large-format snap-ring plier, my Rambler Mentality insisted on trying a cheaper solution. I was at Harbor Freight and picked up a long-reach 16" needle-nose plier set for under $10 with coupon. I'm figuring I can grind down the end of the straight plier a bit to grip the big snap ring. We'll see how that goes...
