Octane is a family of chemicals

Octane is a generic name & it means two things. One is a chemical compound (or family of them) The other is octane number which is an arbitrary test to measure the antiknock level of a gasoline.
There is iso-octane which is the reference point for 100 octane number. There are a swag of other compounds which are also octane (i.e. they have 8 carbon atoms). Some have very low octane number and you would not want them. And there are heptanes and nonanes (7 and 9 carbon atoms) which have better octane number than iso-octane. My point is that octane is not a 'magic' chemical that is added to gasoline to make its octane number as displayed on the gas pump. I could make a gasoline blend without any octane in it (that is no compound with 8 carbon atoms) yet it would have an octane number.
Spent too many years making the stuff.
