n-octane, which is a straight-chain saturated hydrocarbon of eight carbon length, would have an octane rating down around 40 or 50, if I remember right. Iso-octane, which is a branched chain hydrocarbon (2,2,4-trimethylpentane), is the reference standard for an octane rating of 100. One of the guys in my lab in grad school (he was a chemist, no less) was under the impression that iso-octane was a more potent fuel than what he could get at the gas station, so he ran it in his motorcycle whenever he could get some. He was wrong, and he was depriving his fuel system of the detergents present in the gas station gasoline.
BTW, Bill D - do you know if a higher octane rating also corresponds to being less combustible, all else being equal? That is, if you are comparing aliphatic hydrocarbon to aliphatic hydrocarbon?
