Fred,
I am thinking that you have several different problems going on and need to take a step-by-step approach. Unfortunately over the years, mechanics like the one you mention who don't understand the system have buggered up these cars quite a bit, so some sorting is needed. If you will send me an email off-line I can scan some things out of the service manual and send them to you. I would recommend that you first get the throttle blade angle set properly and then the idle airflow. Pretty soon after that you are going to need to check the fuel pressures - a lot depends on those being right. Once we know those to things are correct, you should be able to get it to idle smoothly and run smoothly at a steady speed. Once you get there then you can worry about the cold start system. There are some other timing issues (these distributors like to sieze up) and possible air leak issues that may be involved too, but if you can get the basic air and fuel systems working properly then the rest should be relatively easy. Also, if you can send some pictures of the wiring items you mention that would be helpful. I'll do my best to help out!
Good Luck!
Gary
