I think the vacuum check valve you are thinking of is the Vacuum Impulse Contact we've been discussing. The only other thing I can think of is some of the later cars had an orifice in the vacuum line to the distributor (keeps the spark retarded more of the time and reduces NOx emissions). The push button on the dash is one option for cold starts! (but I think in this case it's just as easy to fix the original wiring).
