Hi Ed,
SAE 30 specifies a range, as you know, and Mobil chose to formulate
0W-30 a little thicker at 100 degrees than 5W-30 or 10W-30.
This is not the rule. It's just Mobil 1's formulation of its 30
weights.
Mobil 1 10W-30 is a great oil.
0W does not necessarily mean thin. It just means that the oil contains
maybe a little more Viscosity Modifier molecules which shear easily. When
Viscosity Modifiers shear, the high temperature viscosity drops. That's
maybe why Mobil chose to make 0W-30 thicker to begin with so that when
it shears it's still an SAE 30 weight oil.
thanks
Jae
