Hi, Ed, I'm trying to figure the insolubles out, too. I left the original oil filter on my car for 5,000 miles and it collected lots of break-in material; the insolubles on my UOA came up as 0.5%. Blackstone says they're comfy up to a limit of 0.6%.

I agree, your use of M1 is probably cleaning your engine, which is definitely a good thing. I'm not 100% sure if this directly correlates with the level of insolubles found though! If you still have the used oil filter, you can cut it up and look down into the filter pleats to see any accumulated gunk in there, might be interesting.

This SAAB filter has _lots_ of filter media for its size, so I'm thinking capacity is not a problem.

There's another SAAB used oil analysis on Bob's where a Mann filter was used with LubroMoly 5W-40 oil for 10,000 miles; the level of insolubles was also 0.5%. Previously that same SAAB used a Mobil 1 oil filter and M1 10W-30 for 9,000 miles and the insolubles was 0.4%.

Someone ran a Purolator Pure One filter on a SAAB 9-5 V6 for 6,500 miles and the insolubles came back as 0.4%.

From these data it seems that the more expensive oil filters might provide a lower level of insolubles, but there aren't enough reports to make definite conclusions.. I will have my next oil analyzed (SAAB filter, M1 0W-40, car will have 10k, oil and oil filter will have 5k miles) and we shall see. Then I plan on running ACDelco Ultraguard Gold filters for 10k intervals also with M1 0W-40.. stay tuned!

Jason
