It's a witch's brew, engine oil. The base oil, in this case polyalphaolefin, comes in different viscosities, to which viscosity modifiers are added to bring the soup to the desired texture. 10W30 is well within the range of PAO base oil by itself without any help from the chef. A 0W-30 or 0W-40 is going to start off as something lighter still than 0W, and then be brought up to snuff with whatever spices are deemed tasty. But here's the rub - to satisfy A5/B5 (the lighter weight equivalent of A3/B3) the oil must stay in grade through to the end of the shear test. If I'm an oil chef, that tells me that I want the stuff in the bottle to be blended so that it hits the top of the 30 weight range. Shear down is not a problem with the 10W-30 and its (presumed) absence of viscosity modifiers. What I want here is an oil that hits the low end and the high end, and is already in the pipeline for other uses ... like for example the base oil in 15W50? Could be...only the Mobil 1 cook knows for sure.

Back to Tom Townsend's advice ... harken back to the NINES story, and John Lippis' similar observations that got the NINES study started - similar kind of environment - hot temperature, mountains, and "hard hitting" (John's term for high torque) APC and Trionic Turbo motors. How hard? I've seen a transmission in Tom's shop with the teeth sheard off third gear. No wonder people get concerned, those kinds of loads and too-light oil will make sort work of the main and crank bearings. But it's not the left hand number that is in play. Who cares if the oil shows 6000 centi-poise viscosity readings at -35C (0W) or -20C (15W) when the high speed high temperature viscosity reading is somewhere between two and five centipoise? The best way to obtain adequate HTHS viscosity is to select the oil of your choice that meets both Saab's viscosity requirements (currently 0WX to 10WX) and ACEA A3/B3.
