The new 9-3's have aluminum alloy blocks. But all aluminum engines have iron cylinder liners. Iron is still the materal of choice. But with liners in alloy blocks, the iron chemistry can be better, as the cost of alloying cast iron for a iron block is much higher than just the liners. And the liners can be spin cast and will chill much faster producing a finer grain structure.
I don't know if the liners are wet or dry liners. Wet liners are surrounded by coolant and are thicker. Dry liners are thinner and pressed into the aluminum casting and don't get direct cooling. Wet floating liners are better as they stay round as the block distorts with heat and mechanical loads. In diesels, wet floating liners require special coolants to prevent cavitation on the coolant side. Gassers would not have such issues unless detonation was occuring. Then cavitation would be the least of your worries and would not last long.
