95% of all driving can be handled by a two-seater, or even a two-wheeler plus a rain coat. . . how many of us are ditching cars and switching to motorcycles? I'm sure that at least 95% of trips made by even a dead and buried ex-motorcyclist were safe.
95% of a year means 18 days are left out immobilized; 95% of winter means 4-5 days are left out immobilized, or 9-10 half-days if heavy snow / icing takes place in the middle of the day or one has to get going early in the morning.
Heck, 95% of winter driving can be done with all-season tires of reasonable tread design even in a FWD car, and not requiring winter tires at all.
The real issue is how much one is willing to pay for that extra 5% reserve capacity. That, IMHO, should be up to the individuals making the trade-off's for themselves. There was a time when crude SUV-bashing was socially acceptable among certain circles, just like crude racial jokes against upstart blacks when the latter just started entering the upper echelons of the society. Nowadays however, even this thread shows that there are enough SUV owners, that the crude SUV-bashing has lost its social appeal.
