The overwhelming majority vehicle miles do not involve accidents. If you want to talk about fostering over-confidence, you can say the same about cars vs. motorcycles, and even cars over walking. When are you going to make fun of car drivers? After all, I have seen plenty cars stuck in snow or gone off the road in snow and rain; heck I went off the road once myself in my 5 series when hit black ice . . . I have never seen motorcycle or pedestrians getting stuck by the side highway in similar conditions (unless their cars have broken down and had to walk).
SUV's enable people to get out of driveways on days when cars would have precluded them from out on the road at all. Some of those hazardous days do tend to produce high accident rate . . . but compare to cars that wouldn't be out on the road at all. If you really want to envious about people being able to be out and about when you can't, there are plenty people don't have cars and can feel more adequate about themselves making fun of car owners. Heck, there are entire TV programs making fun of stupid car drivers.
