Yep, I agree that picture looks scary, but to my understanding it's about 3-4 hr job that doesn't require anything special but smth like belt tensioner (probably). Moreover, I believe it requires only two or three wrenches: 10, 13mm and 7mm if they use bolt-clamps instead of spring-clams for water hoses.

Btw, if anybody ever read service manual for C900 then he better remember that alternator replacement assumes the engine to be pulled out of the car (but some manage to get this job done w/o that mess involved). So what?

If $1200 quote goes for the labor only then it's quite an overkill. If it includes original parts like belt, water pump and so forth then it should be sorta ok for the prices of nowadays.
