"or set up Fishcer-Tropish synthetic gasoline production facilities that can use the electricity to produce gasoline from natural gas and coal...." You'd think we'd do more of that—the US Air Force, as part of its Assured Fuel Initiative (w/a goal of 50% from alt sources by 2016) tried to jumpstart interest through a B52 alternative fuel pilot program, and it reached successful completion with certification in '07. The follow on program is targeting the B1 and C17. Still, Syntroleum (the company it partnered with to produce the test blend) is a struggling stock and the conventional wisdom still seems to be that the cost/benefit calculus is still upside down. We need to take advantage of the kind of efficiencies Reality is talking about, and to do that requires a leap of faith (and the political wherewithal) to make infrastructure investments and stand up multisector public/private partnerships (which are--understandably--being viewed with great skepticism by voters right now, at least in the US.)
