Putting it in the woods is fine, but I wouldn't let it pile up. I usually rake it out flat in the woods. If it piles up, it can get pretty rank in certain conditions. Raking it out helps it compost evenly and faster too.
I also have a lawn vacuum that mulches the leaves in the fall. I dump that on top of the grass and give it a good mix. The greens and browns make a pretty nice compost.
Just mowing with a side discharge, and leaving the clippings on the lawn for a day to get sun baked makes them easier to pick up with the bagger.
