There are extension spring setups with a spring on each side of the door, running parallel to the motion of the door along the tracks. These springs actually elongate when the door is in the down position. Not sure how'd you go about relieving tension on that with the door in the down position.
There are also torsion spring arrangements where the springs coil on a rod at the head of the door opening and just twist to provide the torsional force to lighten the load of the door. There are lots of resources online explaining how to work with these springs. The rods should be threaded so you can turn the spring to relieve tension.
