I guess the risk is highest while relieving the set screws. The process is not that complicated but just a bit dangerous. Then again, I've changed all 4 shocks on the 9-5 and a spring compressor letting go would be bad news also!
At the very beginning of the video below, they show a spring breaking as the door approaches the end of it's travel. It is not a big ordeal (nor did I even notice ours break, and these springs typically break every 5-10 years, right?). That's why I figured inducing a break while the whole system was otherwise intact might be ok... The winding bars are absolutely essential to install a new spring, so in the context of a replacement, might as well do it the same both ways... maybe you're right though that that is easiest...
