I'm sure with a few people, it could be opened. I can move it a bit - it does have half the counterbalancing force after all... but it is a heavy wood door, not a thin stamped steel door... and more importantly, it would be less safe to try to remove the spring with the door up. Accessing the spring with the door up is difficult because the door would be in the way and if the door fell on someone, it would be lethal (it is a falling object with increasing mass in the vertical plane). I suspect that is why they use 2 springs - if 1 breaks, the door is at least partially counterbalanced, limiting the speed that it falls.
