I once heard a car thief interviewed who was giving suggestions on ways to make you car less vulnerable to break-ins. He said he never touched SAABs because they were too much trouble.

For those of you unfamiliar with the lock system on the 95/96/Sonett and early 99's, the inside button was not connected to the outside lock. The key engaged or disengaged a mechanism that pushed a lever on the latch mechanism inside the car, while the inside button was a safety bolt that locked the door latch to the post on the door jamb and prevented the door from flying open in an accident. A person could unlock the outside lock, open the door, and lock it back up before removing the key. The door could still be opened from the inside, but not from the outside.

I worked for a SAAB dealer in 1974-75. One day I came into work to find a 96 parked in my bay with the keys locked inside it. The driver had left the engine running when he ran into a store to buy cigarettes. When he came out the door was locked. After some work, someone managed to open the hood and shut off the ignition by pulling the wire off the coil. Only having the one key, he had the car towed to our shop to have us get it open. It took three of us working for about 1-1/2 hours to get inside. I pried the rear side window open and managed to snake a coathanger inside and snag the latch on the window. Then I knocked the pin out of the latch so I could open the window wide enough to reach in and snag the door handle and open the door. I could probably do it faster now that I've figured out the technique, but it was quite a job getting into that car.

Any wonder why I always carried my spare key in my wallet?
