I would have to assume that Nordic made a business decision to pay on a per use basis for the rolling road rather than make the capital investment. An obvious and fair question to ask in the future is how they test their tuning.
The Nordic kit for the Aero and Viggen consists of a larger exhaust (3” down pipe and catalyst w/ 2.5” cat back), K&N air filter, fuel pressure regulator and software. All of these changes are consistent with the higher output power. Thus on the surface you can hardly fault Nordic’s approach on a technical basis.
With respect to Hirsch their web site information is only a faction of the information that they will supply in paper form. I have also received information about Hirsch from various sources that is positive in nature. My experience to date is that Hirsch is able and willing to address questions about their ECU tuning approach.
The Viggen’s ECU software, for drivability, adjusts the sensitivity of throttle input to the requested torque. This can be very annoying if you want power (and a lot of it) but have been driving in stop and go traffic where the system decided you want mild response. On the other hand if you “train” the system to give quick response via aggressive driving power will come on very violently. You cite that the Viggen is already on the edge. I know that the car will crab over in a curve at 50 mph in third gear when given an abrupt full power input. To a large extent I consider this a driver error. For a given chassis dynamic, tire and road condition there will be a finite traction limit. With a large enough engine output car control will become a real issue. Is this a fault of the car?
When I was driving the Viggen on the track for the last few laps a rainstorm hit. I can attest that the Viggen performs very well at very high speeds with the SP2000’s as long as power application is smooth and progressive. Anything else and it’s crab walk city.
I guess I have mixed feelings. On one hand these examples suggest that Saab would have great reservations with releasing a Viggen with significantly more HP. On the other hand with reasonable driver inputs I would expect drivability to be acceptable. (Are we always smooth and progressive in our driving?) On the track I can fully attest that an extra 50 HP would be very welcome.
