John's comment doesn't make much sense to me - "if you drive everywhere flat out take the manual" -
I love my '01 manual Aero (you've probably read in the archives the great discussion I got going a few months ago on this topic), but find it just as enjoyable driving hard or lazy.
Why don't you can test drive an '01 manual - one broken in so that you could drive hard.
It seems to me that your mind is about made up - you say that you're impressed with the auto. I'm not sure how much they've changed for '02, but when I had an '01 auto Aero for a day as a loaner car, I was expecting to love it based on the many praises for the autobox on this board, and yet I didn't care for it at all - to me it was just another uninvolving autobox that I would not be satisfied driving daily. Also, I'm not sure it you can program it, but it got annoying having to remember to push the sport button everytime I started the car, as I would always use it.
When I got back my manual at the end of the day it gave me a real rush driving home shifting for myself - I felt truly involved and had a blast, it gave me a new appreciation for my car.
If the Honda shift feel is your benchmark, you will be let down by most other brands, although I do like the Passat feel much more than that of current BMW's.
My favorite autobox was on the '94 Acura Legend GS I had for a while - a very sporty auto with very fast downshift response.
It seems like if you can live with an auto and like the Saab box, then you may end up being disappointed with the manual feel compared to the Honda.
