Simon: I agre with just about everything you have stated about the differences, and advantages of the auto over the manual, with possibly one exception. In this year's Aero,I very much doubt that the difference in the 0-60 mph time is even close to one second. Personally, just from gut feel of having driven a few of each, I think it is more likely about three tenths of a second or so. The closer spaced ratios in the asuto, coupled with the torque converter, tend to put even more performance down low, giving the off the line advantage to the automatic.
I do not think that there has been a magazine road test of these two models side by side yet to confirm this, but consider this fact. On Hirsch Performance web site, they give the 0-62 kph times for their modified Aeros in both auto and manual mode. I believe that in the 260HP and 280 hp variants, the auto was either within .1 second or dead equal to the manual version. In reality, chances are that Hirsch, being a performance oriented company, has a little more experience in measuring and documenting acceleration numbers than even Saab. Just food for thought. Another brief comment to the contributor who said something like " If you drive flat out all the time, get the manual". How the heck can you drive a car like the Aero "flat out" all the time? This car is a rocketship, and driving it in any kind of halfway responsible manner on public roads, and within the law, would pretty much rule out the "flat out" thing in most countries.
