Great posts on this topic!
Lou, you are quite right - driving an Aero Flatout would be pretty terminal for all involved - there are, however, many individuals out there who get a 'buzz' out of driving manuals hard (male, macho ego???) - in an Aero that'll mean getting legal limit PDQ - perhaps even in 2nd gear??
At the risk of getting seriously flamed - I think it is only in very recent years that Auto transmissions have been very close to or equal from a perforance point of view to that of a manual 'box the in same vehicle. The 9-5's 5spd auto has a constantly slipping clutch inside the torque convertor to minimise torque 'drop-off' during upshifts - along with some very fancy electronics - I've also driven tha manual - and I don't think there's much in it anymore.
Perhaps I should have said 'if you enjoy rowing a manual box - get one, if not take the Auto????
Simon's comments are particuarly interesting - does anyone know how the logic works in the auto box? It would be interesting to know what the 'sampling' period of the box is as it determines the driving style - or are we giving it mmore credit that its' really due?
