Larry,
You are at a point in the car buying process that we all go through. I had all but settled on an Audi S8 but I wanted to make sure my decision was right, after all getting the dealer down to $64K from $80K was a significant savings but $64K is a lot of money for a car.

I took all the Audi models out, many times, as well as the BMWs, some Mercedes and Jaguars as well as SAABs.

After much consideration, and after having different cars to test drive over many weekends I opted for the 2002 SAAB Aero and I have not regretted my decision.

I based my decision on facts mostly, Economics and car specs, once I narrowed the choices to a few.
Economics:
1) Cost to purchase (I could buy 2 Aeros for the cost of 1 S8)
2) Cost to insure (I was surprised when I got quotes on the Aero vs BMW vs the Audi - The german cars have a high premium.)
3) Cost to run - Best miles per gallon of all that I looked at.

Car specs:
1) Drivers seat: Best lumbar support (I had back surgery so this is a must)
Have you driven a SAAB to test the seat support?
2) Passenger seats - I wanted rear seat heaters which ruled many cars out.
I did not want to feel guilty warm and toasty while the ones in the back froze on the cold leather seats in winter.
3) Rear seat room - I sat in every back seat of the cars I considered. My kids fight once in a while, sibling rivalry or something, so I wanted room for them thinking the more room the less likely they will get into turf issues. (It has worked) Personally, the lack of room in the A4 made my decision easy.
4) Performance - I wanted a car that could get out of harms way when needed, could accelerate onto the highway and could brake fast and straight.

I recommend test drives that last more than a few miles. NYC can be a fun place to tour around. Best of luck.
