Actually, in first and second gear, with the auto gearbox, the ARC, and the Aero have the SAME level of torque available at the wheels, due to the limiting of that parameter in the aero in the lower gears. There is imperceptible difference in the off the line performance, but once the Aero gets humming, things are a lot different. The Aero will out rev and out pull the Arc as the speeds increase.
Although I have an 02 Aero, and love it for a lot of other reasons besides the engine, I find the V-6 bashing of the so called purists to be mostly based on misinformation, and not on facts. Other than some growling intake related noises on open throttle conditions( which I do not like), it is probably the best engine of the three offered in the US market. It is very efficient, gets better mileage that the Aero, and is also very smooth. Coupled with the terrific five speed auto, it is a great drive train. Lack of a stick is no problem as far as I am concerned. The auto is a pleasure, and much smoother and quieter than a stick.
What will the purists say when they find that the four in the new 9-3 is not that same so called "true SAAB" engine that they are used to? Or that the next generation V_6 is a new model? Time to realize that nothing stays the same, and that new technology brings with it the need to adapt to new products.
Enough ranting for now. Enjoy your V-6 if you have one.
